New Jersey's namesake is the British island of Jersey. Our colony was established in the thirteen colonies in 1776. We shared a governor with New York. Prior to 1664, New Jersey was controlled by the Swedish, Dutch, and Native Americans. New Jersey was third to sign the constitution. We offer religious freedom to all of our people. Unlike other colonies, our English get along well with the Native Americans.
